Jeff could identify the company (RCA, for example) and likely place of manufacture (Chicago, NY, London) of a 78 rpm disc he'd never before held in his hand. With his thumbnail he would feel the widely spaced opening and closing grooves (meaning just before and after the music contained on the tightly spaced grooves), and with the pad of his index finger he would feel the thickness and quality of the paper in the centre label. With those two procedures I saw him correctly identify 8 or 9 out of 10 discs, and he became quite excited when he found one he couldn't recognize.
Truly
Nice thoughts to wake up to on the morning. From Etobicoke to eternity.

Wow.
You’re right, one of a kind Jeff was, from Queen St. W and beyond. He got me listening to Jack Teagarden - the cat went musically deep. RIP
Beautifully said Bill. Does tribute to a gentle, lovely man we all miss.
